A famous מגיד visiting in a town where he was invited to speak, went first thing in the morning to the home of a wealthy man to request a loan. He received the loan, spoke that afternoon, and in the evening repaid the wealthy man. The next morning, the מגיד showed up again and requested a loan. In the evening, he repaid it. This pattern repeated itself over the next few days. Curious, the wealthy man said to the מגיד: “It seems like you really don’t need the money. Why do you keep borrowing it in the morning and repaying it at night?” The מגיד answered: “You’re right. I really don’t need the money. But you have no idea how much confidence it gives me when I speak and know I have cash in my pocket.”
