The גמרא teaches that מיום שחרב בית המקדש ניטלה נבואה מן החכמים וניתנה לשוטים. Rav מרדכי מלכוביץ׳ said: this is surprising because we know that נבואה rests upon a חכם גיבור ועשיר. The explanation for this contradiction is that חז״ל knew that נבואה was removed from החכמים. But no one informed the שוטים of this, so they continue to offer prophesies as if נבואה continues to exist.
