A poor man approached a wealthy man and requested a loan. When the rich man asked him for collateral or a guarantor, the poor man said he has neither, but he can assure him that he’ll repay the loan because the רב said that whoever is poor in this world will be wealthy in עולם הבא. “I’ll repay you there,” he promised. When the wealthy man asked what he will do with the money, the poor man said that he would buy merchandise and sell it. “If so, I can’t extend a loan to you,” the wealthy man said. “Perhaps you’ll become rich and as a result will be poor in the next world and thus be unable to pay your debt.”
