An עם-הארץ had a printed copy of the מגילה in his hands and was cutting out every mention of המן. When asked what he was doing, the עם-הארץ explained that he was carrying out the explicit requirement of מחה תמחה את זכר עמלק. A fellow עם-הארץ responded that may be okay as far as the name of המן is concerned, but you’re also cutting out the holy words on the back of each page. What sin did they commit? The עם-הארץ responded: “It’s as חז״ל said: אוי לרשע ואוי לשכנו.”
