A woman came to consult with the Rebba and was crying miserably when she entered, but was smiling as she left. Observing this, a man asked the שמש what happened. The שמש explained that the woman’s husband had disappeared and left her an agunah and the Rebba assured her he would return. But, the שמש volunteered, the Rebba was mistaken. He’s not coming back. There’s no chance that he’ll come back. Stunned, the man said to the שמש: “How can you say he’s not coming back, when the Rebba assured her he is?” The שמש responded: “Der Rebba kikt nisht auf frauen.” (The Rebba doesn’t look at women).
