A מתנגד asked a רב: “Why is it that מתנגדים sit to learn משניות after the תפילה, while חסידים sit and drink?” The רב responded: “The תפילה of מתנגדים is read without fervor; it is mournful and we say משניות for the dead. But the תפילה of חסידים is full of life and the living need a little משקה.”
