The כתב סופר was not feeling well, but couldn’t turn down a ביקור חולים visit from Baron Rothschild. Before Rothschild left, he asked if the רבי would give him a few words of תורה. The כתב סופר obliged, saying: “We find in מסכת בבא קמא that רבי יוסי taught והודעת להם את הדרך ילכו בה – זו בקור חולים. Our חכמים indicated with this that visits to the sick should be brief, so as not to burden them. Therefore, it is written והודעת להם את הדרך – this is the דרך of observing the מצוה of ביקור חולים – by ילכו בה – getting up and leaving without staying too long.”
