A חסיד was speaking of the greatness of his רבי. “He’s absolutely amazing!” said the חסיד. “He fasts all day, not tasting a thing until after מעריב.” A מתנגד answered that perhaps he eats בצנעה, when no one is looking. Incensed, the חסיד screamed “רשע מרושע! Who gave you the right to say such an awful thing?” The מתנגד replied: “Who gave me רשות? I have it from רבותינו זכרונם לברכה, who said: אין הברכה שורה אלא בדבר הסמוי מן העין.”
