When ר׳ אייזיל חריף arrived in Slonim to serve as the city’s רב, it was a beautiful sunny day, without a cloud in the sky. One of those greeting him said: “We have a מסורה that if it’s raining when a new רב comes to the city, סימן טוב לו ולקהילתו. How do you explain the fact that upon your arrival the sun is shining and sky is clear?” ר׳ אייזיל חריף responded: “The amount of rain is dependent upon the merit of the רב. If he’s רב קטן, there are just drops of rain; if he’s רב בינוני, there is regular rain; if he’s רב גדול, there is torrential rain; but if he’s a רב like me, it would require a מבול and הבורא יתברך has sworn the He will not bring another מבול to the world.”
