At the 25th Anniversary reunion of Columbia Business School Alumni, one alumnus made a particular impression. He showed up in a chauffeur driven limousine, was wearing a very expensive watch, and had the look of a man who had been very successful. This was particularly surprising to his fellow alumni and former professors because he had been such a poor student and had barely managed to graduate. “How did you make your money?” they asked. “Easy,” he answered. “I opened a dollar store and advertised that we sell everything with a 2% markup.” “And you’re able to operate profitably with only a 2% markup?” he was asked. “Sure,” he replied. “I buy for one dollar and sell for three.”
