The great רב מאיר שפירא once asked: “What is the difference between a Jew who has ש״ס in his brain and a Jew who has ש״ס in his bookcase?” “The former,” he said, “is like a שומר שכר, having through his many hours of study paid full price to acquire it, and therefore is liable to make payment if he doesn’t guard it and it gets lost or stolen from him. The latter is but a שומר חינם and has no responsibility.”
