When Nicholas, the Czar of Russia, decreed that Jewish boys be drafted for military service, a group of boys who were about to leave for the army came to רבי דוב בר for a ברכה. The רבי blessed them that they should go in peace and return in peace. The boys then asked what the דין was for them regarding טריפה. The רבי sighed and said אונס רחמנא פטריה. There is no requirement here of יהרג ולא יעבור. The רבי remained silent for a moment and then added: “But don’t lick the bones.”
