The תורה relates that לכל בני ישראל לא יחרץ כלב לשונו. A reason for this is found in yesterday’s דף, which says כלבים צועקים, מלאך המות בעיר; כלבים שוחקים, אליהו הנביא בעיר. At the very time that מכת בכורות took place, אליהו הנביא came to the Jews. Thus, the dogs could neither howl nor play and were forced to remain silent.
