It was the first day of school in Paris. The teacher asked each child to stand up and state his name. When little Mohammed rose and introduced himself, the teacher said: “In France, you need to have a French name. As of today, you will be known as Jean Pierre.” When he went home, his parents asked: “Mohammed, what did you learn in school today?” “I learned that since we live in France, my name isn’t Mohammed anymore. I’m Jean Pierre now.” His father was furious. “What? You’re embarrassed with your name? You want to reject your heritage?” And with that, he slapped him across his face. The next day, Jean Pierre/Mohammed came to school with a swollen face. The teacher asked him what happened. “Two hours after I became French,” he answered, “I was attacked by two Arabs.”
