The Gemara in מסכת ברכות says: ביציאתו מה הוא אומר? מודה אני לפניך ה׳ אלוקי ששמת חלקי מיושבי בית המדרש ולא שמת חלקי מיושבי קרנות. There are those who are עוסק בתורה diligently, studying day by day, and there are those who think that in one night, ליל שבועות, they can make up for the serious learning that they don’t do all year, merely looking at the first few פסוקים in a חומש or the first few lines in a גמרא. They are merely nibbling at the edges. Perhaps that is why they are referred to as יושבי קרנות – they only learn a corner of this פרשה or a corner of that מסכתא.
