The תורה says ואברם כבד מאד במקנה בכסף ובזהב. Why did he need all that wealth? The answer is that the תורה says in the very next two verses that he went on his journeys ויקרא שם אברם בשם ה. Theרבונו של עולם knew that for the words of אברם to be accepted, he first had to be wealthy.
