The Israeli author ש״י עגנון was well known as a vegetarian. However, he did eat fish. When asked to explain why, he said: “As you may have heard, I can speak the languages of בהמות, חיות, עופות ודגים. One day, I asked a fish ‘Since דיני שחיטה וניקור ומליחה don’t apply to you, and since we may cook you with meat or dairy, is your flesh considered actual meat and therefore אסור to vegetarians or is it not considered actual meat and therefore is permitted to them?’ Since the fish was underwater and couldn’t respond, I allow myself ליהנות מן הספק.”
