A charity collector, who would go door to door for צדקה, would carry a lit candle with him as he went from home to home. When asked why, he explained: “There are many people who, when they’re asked to take out a few dollars from their pockets, their נשמה flies out and its customary to light a candle upon the departure of a נשמה.”
