When רבי חיים of Volozshin arrived early to the בית מדרש to pray תפילת שחרית, the בחורי ישיבה who were present would promptly start learning גמרא loudly, disturbing the מתפללים. The רבי observed, “I had always wondered why the גמרא says הלואי שיתפלל אדם כל היום כולו. How is that possible? If a person were to be מתפלל all day, when would he learn תורה? But now these words are clear to me. I see that the בחורי ישיבה are learning בשקידה ובהתמדה דוקה בשעת התפילה. That’s why our חכמים said הלואי שיתפלל אדם כל היום. That way the בחורי ישיבה will also be learning all day long.”
