An observation was made by רבי אייזל חריף that the title גאון was being granted liberally. “In our days,” he said, “the גאונים are multiplying like mushrooms after a rain. Soon, the words of the נביא ישעיהו will be fulfilled: פרי העץ לגאון – even potatoes will be referred to with the title גאון.”
