A רב who was also a medical doctor was asked by which title he prefers to be called. “I prefer רב over doctor,” he said, “because we find in בבא מציעה: אבידת אביו ואבידת רבו, אבידת רבו קודמתך because his father brings him to חיי העולם הזה and his רבי brings him to חיי העולם הבא. And a רב who brings someone to חיי העולם הבא is honored. But a doctor who brings someone to חיי העולם הבא certainly does not add to his honor.”
