ברכות-סא

The וואלאסשינער רב had the מנהג of sleeping שבת afternoon after the סעודה.  Once, he came across תלמידים from his ישיבה cracking jokes and discussing דברי חול on שבת.  He rebuked them, saying: “שבת was created either to learn or to sleep.   שבת spells שינה שבת תענוג.”  One of the תלמידים responded: “Perhaps it spells שיחה בשבת תענוג?”  The גאון immediately answered:  “It is written לב חכם לימינו.  The חכם places the dot over the שבת שין on the right, making it a shiin which can be read as either שונה, learning, or as שינה, sleeping.  ולב כסיל לשמאלו.  The fool places the dot on the left of the שין so that it reads סין and he can engage in שיחה.”
