A survey was conducted among the animals in the West Bank, asking them in the event of peace between the Israelis and the Palestinians where they would choose to live. The chicken answered that it would want to live amongst the Palestinians. When asked why, it explained that amongst Israelis it’s well fed but is confined to a coop, while among Palestinians it would be free to roam wherever it wanted. The cow also chose the Palestinians, explaining that among the Israelis it’s confined to a barn, eating straw and being milked every day. But like the chicken, among the Palestinians it would be be free to roam and eat what it wanted. When the survey finally got to the donkey, it declared that it absolutely wanted to live amongst the Israelis. Everyone was surprised and asked it to explain. “Look,” the donkey explained, “for the Palestinians, I’m a beast of burden, all day in the hot sun, carrying loads and people. But among the Israelis, look how many like me have succeeded in becoming government officials.”
