A בחור in Volozhin who had been appointed the Purim Rov had far too much to drink before delivering his דרשה, which flung insult after insult against the נצי”ב. After Purim, the בחור asked for מחילה and the נצי”ב forgave him, despite the protest of one of his sons, who cited the Yiddish expression that what is on a sober man’s lung is on a drunken man’s tongue. The נצי”ב said: “If that were true, the שוחטים could save lots of time and money. Every time they slaughter an animal and find a perforation on the lung, they lose a whole animal. Why don’t they first get the animal drunk and then check the tongue? If there was a problem on the lung, they could see it on the tongue and would know not to do the שחיטה! Obviously, the rule does not apply to a בהימה. That’s why I forgave this בחור.”
