During the British Mandate, there were those in ארץ ישראל who spoke עברית and those who spoke Yiddish. The Chief Rabbi, רב יוסף זוננפלד, declared “לשון הקודש היא לשוננו.”  Surprised, his students said “But everyone knows that the רב speaks in Yiddish.”  “That’s true,” the רב responded. עם הבריות אני מדבר אידיש, אך עם הקדוש ברוך הוא הריני מדבר אך ורק בלשון הקדוש
