The last event in מגילת אסתר is וישם המלך אחשורוש מס על הארץ ואיי הים.  Why does it end with the imposition of taxes? The answer is that this occurred shortly after the unsuccessful attempt to kill the Jews.  It comes to teach us that you can escape death, but you can’t escape taxes.
