One שבת, between מנחה and ערבית, a מגיד began to address the קהל in the בית כנסת, when an arrogant עז פנים screamed out that the time had come for ברכו. The מגיד calmly responded “Give me just a few moments and I will relate an interesting חידוש. In פרק שירה, it states כלבים אומרים לכו נכרעה נברכה לפני ה׳. This is rather surprising, because what connection do dogs have to ברכו? The answer can be derived from the ספרי הגילגולים, which teach that כלבים are עזי נפש and אנשים עזי פנים מגולגלים בכלבים. However, because of our sins, this is a problem in our generation which has so many עזי פנים that there simply aren’t enough dogs available for each of them לגלגל. Therefore, each כלב is the גלגול of ten עזי פנים and constitutes a מנין by itself, able to say ברכו on its own, without interfering with the ability of the rest of the ציבור to hear דברי תורה.”
