The Mendelsohns were extremely upset when they learned that their housekeeper was planning to quit. “I’m pregnant,” she announced, and everybody knows I don’t have a husband.” But the Mendelsohn family provided a solution. “We’ll adopt the baby,” they told her, “and you can stay right here as always.” All went well for the next two years, when the housekeeper announced, that she was expecting again. “Rather than lose you,“ said the Mendelsohns, “we’ll adopt this baby too.” The following year, the housekeeper again had an appointment at the maternity ward but she was so valuable to the Mendelsohns that they adopted the third baby as well. As soon as she was out of the hospital, the housekeeper approached the family. “I’m quitting!” she said firmly. “But why?” they gasped. “Because when I came to work for you,” she said, “you didn’t tell me that I would have to work for a family with three kids.”
