A second grade teacher asked one of the children: “If I gave you two cats and another two cats and another two cats, how many would you have?” The boy answered: “Seven.” The teacher responded: “No. Let me put it to you differently. If I gave you two apples and another two apples and another two apples, how many would you have?” The child answered: “Six.” “Very good,” said the teacher. “Now, if I gave you two cats and another two cats and another two cats, how many would you have?” The boy again answered: “Seven.” Frustrated, the teacher asked: “How do you get seven?” The boy answered: “Because I already have a cat.”
