Rivka had a grandson studying at a university in Arizona. One day, he telephoned her and announced that he was getting married. “That’s so wonderful,” she said. ”Who is the lucky girl?” she asked. Her grandson said they met in college, but was reluctant to say more. “What are you hiding from me?” Rivka asked. After pushing and prodding, he admitted that she was Indian. Rivka spent half an hour on the phone trying to persuade him not to do it. But her grandson was stubborn. He wouldn’t listen. Finally, she said “Well, if you’re going to have an Indian wife, you’re going to have an Indian grandma. From now on, you can call me Sitting Shivah.”
