A student once asked רבי אייזל חריף why it often is that גאונים who sign a document add the title הקטן after their names, while למדנים whose knowledge of תורה is much shallower add the title רב. He explained as follows: “Those למדנים are concerned that if they sign with the title הקטן, it will be viewed as הודאת בעל דין because they’re already בחזקת ׳קטן׳ and they won’t be included in a מנין. Therefore, they add the title הרב. But true גאונים don’t have that concern because the הלכה is קטן וספר תורה עמו מצטרפים למנין.”
