A town had two great רבנים whose חסידים would constantly fight with each other. A גאון was asked how is that possible? After all, the משנה says תלמידי חכמים מרבים שלום בעולם and here we have two תלמידי חכמים in town and where is the שלום between them? The גאון responded: “Have you forgotten? One of the מידות by which we’re דורש the תורה is ריבוי אחר ריבוי אינו אלא למעט.”
