A משכיל once asked ר׳ אייזל חריף why חרדים are מדקדקים in their observance of the תרי״ג מצוות but are מזלזל in דרך ארץ and worldly customs, while משכילים even though they are מזלזל במצוות, areמדקדקים בהלכות דרך ארץ. “The reason is simple,” ר׳ אייזל responded. “When בני ישראל came to receive the תורה, the חרדים and יראי שמים got up early and rushed to הר סיני and received the תורה שבכתב and the תורה שבעל פה. The משכילים, however, took their time. They were in no rush. They got up midday, bathed, got dressed, had breakfast and took a leisurely stroll to הר סיני. By the time they got there, קבלת התורה was almost over. All that was left for you was one of the last מסכתות of the גמרא, namely מסכת דרך ארץ.”
