A חסיד known for his תאווה appeared before רבי יהודה צבי of Setratena. The רבי noticed that he wore his גרטל high up. The רבי said to him: “The גרטל is a form of belt which separates between the upper and the lower sections of a man’s body, which primarily are spiritual and physical, respectively. Therefore, מי שלבו בשמים lowers the גרטל to enlarge the upper portion and מי שלבו לעולם הזה raises the גרטל as far as possible to enlarge the lower portion. Indeed, the ישמעאלים, who refused to accept the תורה because it says לא תנאף, raise the גרטל all the way up to the cloth on their heads.”
