A hungry עני who was invited for סעודת ליל שבת at the home of a גביר, helped himself to half a challah and dunked it into a bowl of fish, soaking up almost all the brine. The angry host said: “It’s surprising that הקדוש ברוך הוא, who performs נסים sparingly, needed to split the ים סוף. Instead, he could have distributed challah to all בני ישראל, who could have dipped their pieces in to the sea, soaking up all the water.” The עני responded: “There are two answers: First, they didn’t have challahs because בצקם לא הספיק להחמיץ. Second, that day was שביעי של פסח, when challah is אסור because it’s חמץ.” The בעל הבית asked: “Why did you take only challah and not the other bread on the table?” The עני answered: “Because challah tastes better.” “But challah is expensive,” said the גביר. “Yes,” agreed the עני, “But it’s worth it!”
