A רב confronted an elderly עם הערץ with his ignorance of all things Jewish. The עם הערץ was embarrassed but didn’t respond. Finally, the רב asked him whether he at least knows who his Creator is. The old man said no. That moment a child passed by and the רב asked him the same question: “Tell me, son, who is your Creator?” The child immediately answered: “אלוקים is my Creator.” The רב turned to the old עם הערץ and said: “Aren’t you embarrassed that this young child knows his Creator and you don’t?” The man responded: “רבי, the child was born only a few years ago and so he still remembers; I’m old and was created many years ago, so I don’t remember.”
