When the קהל in a certain city decided to get rid of their רב, he told them that על פי דין it is אסור for him to give up his position. “What דין?” they asked. He explained as follows: “You are the only ones who don’t want me as רב of your city. All the other קהילות, near and far, want me to stay right here and, as you know, יחיד ורבים, הלכה כרבים.”
