R’ יצחק מאיר, the author of “חידושי הרים,” was asked: “At מעמד הר סיני it states וכל העם רואים את הקולות. This seems odd. Why was it necessary to have this נס of seeing the קולות? Wouldn’t hearing them have been enough?” רב יצחק מאיר replied: “If the קולות were only heard, the commandments לא תרצח, לא תגנוב and the like could have been understood as saying לו, with a vav, that is to say that for Him, לשם שמים, killing and stealing are permitted. Therefore, the commandments had to be seen, so that there be no doubt that the לא was with an aleph.”
