The מגיד of Kelm asked why is the וידוי of יום הכיפורים said בלשון רבים? Why do we say אשמנו, בגדנו rather than אשמתי בגדתי? He answered that if we said it בלשון יחיד, people wouldn’t be able to say the וידוי. “There would be those who would skip it entirely and there would be those who would stuff up their ears so as not to hear what their mouths are saying.”
