The תורה teaches that when יעקב אבינו arrived in חרן, he asked the people:הידעתם את לון בן נחור? ויאמרו ידענו. ויאמר להם השלום לו? ויאמרו שלום. An explanation for the question השלום לו can be found in today’s דף, which says האי צורבא מרבנן דמרחמין חיה בני מתא לאו משום דמעלי טפי אלא משום דלא מוכח להו במילי דשמיא – a רב is liked by his קהילה not because of his own qualities but because he doesn’t rebuke them in religious matters. The כלל is that a צדיק doesn’t have שלום with the members of his קהילה because they resent his pointing out their bad deeds. יעקב אבינו asked השלום לו because he wanted to know if לבן was a צדיק because if he was at peace with the people of his community מסתמא אינו צדיק.
