A רב once remarked that it’s a מצוה to drink עד עלות השחר on פורים night. In מסכת פסחים, we learn השותה כוסו בבת אחת הרי זה גרגרן. But two is דרך ארץ. Therefore, it’s appropriate to divide the contents of the כוס, so that there be חצי in one כוס and חצי in another כוס. Accordingly, as the first משנה in ברכות expressly states: כל מה שאמרו חכמים עד חצות מצותן עד שיעלה עמוד השחר.
