A רב was auditioning for a position as the רב of a large city. In an effort to persuade the קהל to select him, the רב took a long time with his תפילות and otherwise attempted to demonstrate his piety. But when תלמידי חכמים came to see him, he left them with nothing. A ליצן observed: “Our earlier generations were great חכמים. They said: אם הרב דומה למלאך ה׳ צבאות, יבקשו תורה מפיו because the תורה wasn’t given to מלאכים and therefore, there is concern that perhaps he actually is an עם הארץ.”
