A non-Jewish shopkeeper in a small Shtetl once asked a customer what he does for a living. “I’m a מי שבירך maker,” said the Jew. The גוי of course didn’t understand and asked what that was. “I bless people, men and women,” he explained. The גוי then asked if he could bless his sick, elderly father. “Sure,” said the מי שבירך maker. “I need your father’s name and three ruble.” When he was asked if he could bless his mother as well, he said “For three ruble I’ll bless whoever you want.” The גוי asked “What about ישו?” The Jew shook his head. “Sorry, I can’t do that,” he said. “To make a מי שבירך, I need the father’s name.”
