A מגיד once came to a town and after delivering his דרשה managed to collect only a small amount from the קהל. The מגיד became so furious that he started cursing the townspeople. When the רב of the city heard this, he rebuked the מגיד, saying to him: “You are worse than בלעם הרשע. He demanded silver and gold for the קללות, but delivered the ברכות for free. You, on the other hand, demand money for the ברכות and deliver the קללות for free.”
