Rav יהונתן אייבשיץ went to the city of Metz for ראש השנה, seeking to be selected as רב of the city. The מנהג there was to honor the רב to chant ‘מלך עליון.’ When they reached the פיוט, the גבאי approached ר׳ יהונתן and said that the ראשי קהל of Metz wish to confer upon him the honor of reciting מלך עליון. With a smile, ר׳ יהונתן said “I would prefer if it were the opposite. Rather than the קהילה honoring me with מלך עליון, I would prefer if מלך עליון would honor me by granting me the קהילה of Metz.” And so it was.
