The מגיד of Mezritch, רבי דב בר, in a play on the words of today’s דף, said: בני ישראל נאים הם, אלא שהאניות מנוולתם. They boast “I am a חכם or I am a למדן. This מידה of גאווה is מנוולת even the best of men. As משה רבנו said: אנוכי עומד בין ה׳ ובניכם. The אנוכיות separates between a Jew and his father in Heaven. When a Jew says אנוכי תלמיד חכם, he places an iron wall between him and ה׳.”
