An Orthodox Jew had a חילוני over his house for שבת so he could experience how it is observed. On Friday night they had קידוש and drank wine. After the fish, they enjoyed fine scotch whiskey. During the meal and at ברכת המזון, there was more wine. After the סעודה, they went to a שלום זכר and had beer. The following morning, they went to Shul and at the קידוש made לחיים over several shots of whiskey. At lunch, fine red wine was served. And at הבדלה, there was wine again. The חילוני thanked his host for a beautiful שבת and told him he learnt a lot from the experience. “I still don’t quite understand why you can’t turn lights on during שבת,” he said. “But now I understand why you’re not permitted to drive.”
