A רב was married to a woman who made every day of their marriage a miserable ordeal. When she died, he remarried but his second wife was even worse than the first. The רב looked up to Heaven and said: “ריבונו של עולם, the חרם of רבינו גרשום doesn’t permit me to take two wives. But the חרם doesn’t apply to You. You took one, perhaps You also want to take the second?”
