A little boy was studying his vocabulary and came across two words whose meanings were not completely clear to him. He asked his father to explain the difference between anger and exasperation. The father explained that it was a matter of semantics but said “Let me show you an example so you won’t forget it.” The father took his phone and dialed a number at random. “Hello, is Hymie there?” he said when a man answered. “There is no Hymie here!” the man said. “Look up the number before you call!” The father turned to his son. “See,” he said, “that man wasn’t really angry with our call. He was exasperated. Now we’ll call him again and see what happens.“ He dialed the same number and calmly said “Hello, is Hymie there?” “You just called this number and I told you there’s no Hymie here. Look up the number or call Information. Stop annoying me!” The father hung up and said to his son: “Now I’ll show the difference between the man being exasperated and his being angry.” For the third time, he dialed the man’s number and when the voice at the other end of the line bellowed “HELLO!” The father calmly said: “Hello, this is Hymie. Any calls for me?”
