A villager once complained to a רב that when visitors come to his village, they are warmly greeted, invited to a meal and otherwise the beneficiaries of true הכנסת אורחים. But when visitors come to the city, they are treated with indifference and could starve from hunger. The רב responded that this is how it’s always been. “For example,” he said, “when the three מלאכים came down from שמים, which is like a city, to earth, which in comparison is like a village, אברהם אבינו immediately greeted them with a סעודה fit for a king. But when משה רבינו went up to שמים, he was there for forty days and forty nights and all that time he didn’t eat or drink at all.”
